588>Why are Mac and Unix based machines less likely to get viruses than Windows machines? Are there any types of viruses out there that are based for Mac and Unix?
Sources please...
ReplyWindows is the most popular operating system.
Therefore a virus would be more beneficial if it targeted the most users.
This has raised several security issues, forcing Microsoft to review windows security.
Macs are lot less popular, and don't make a good server platform.
Therefore a virus would be tar getting a lesser section of users. Also it would have less result, since most company's store secure information on their servers (however behind heavy firewalls so isn't that much of an issue)
I would like to point out that Macs themselves are less secure, and very vulnerable to remote shell scripts, which is worrying. The reason is that Macs have less firewalls built for it, and the inbuilt firewall is how should i say... ****

Also a lot of shell scripts readily available for osx.
Unix is the most secure Os out there, its very hard to crack. Most professional firewalls use OpenBSD or another unix variant. Cisco use unix for their products.
ReplyGenerally, because Windows systems are more common than Mac or Unix, so the virus spreads quicker.
ReplyThey are less likely to get viruses because they are not as widely used as the Windows operating system. People that create viruses want to affect the most people they can so they base their efforts on windows. yes there are viruses that affect MACs and Unix, but they are few and far between.

Are viruses alive or dead?
587>Although viruses are not made up of living cells, could they still be considered alive since that is only one "characteristic" of life? Or are they dead?
ReplyMost virologists will tell you viruses are alive. The problem isn't the viruses, it's the arbitrary definition of life...
"Their are 7 characteristics of life: homeostasis, organization, metabolism, growth, adaptation, response to stimuli, and reproduction."
Homeostasis - many bacteria don't maintain a stable internal environment, are they dead?
Organization - Viruses are organized, have you ever seen a crystal structure of a virion
Metabolism - agreed, no
Growth - agreed yes
adaptation - agreed yes
response to stimuli - Viruses respond to stimuli, just not the stimuli you think of naturally. Viruses modulate their reproduction and life cycles based on the "stimuli" in the host cell
Reproduction - agreed yes
So the only characteristic that viruses fail to qualifiy as alive for is metabolism, and it could easily be argued that metabolism is the least important and most arbitrar characteristic of living organisms since viruses do a fine job of gathering energy from their environment (host cell).
ReplyViruses that attack humans and animals are alive.
Viruses that attack computers are dead.
ReplyAlive:
It is a surprise to most who think of viruses simply as parasites that they make up the largest component of biomass on this planet (Bamford 2003, Research in Microbiology 154; 231-236). So far every living organism that has been studied to date has had at least one virus associated with it, and viruses out number all other life forms by at least an order of magnitude. When considering that not only is viral presence on this planet all encompassing, but every sequenced organism to date has a major component of its genome that is viral in origin, it becomes apparent that viruses are integral players in the evolution of what we presently consider life.
ReplyThey are dead. Their are 7 characteristics of life: homeostasis, organization, metabolism, growth, adaptation, response to stimuli, and reproduction. A virus shows signs of growth, adaptation and reproduction. And basically, they are mainly consisting of protein and nucleic acid. So final answer is they are dead.
ReplyThat's a great question. In order to be living, one has to reproduce, use energy, grow and develop, and respond to their surroundings. Viruses don't use energy, drow, or respond. You might also recall learning that all living things are made of cells and viruses arn't made of cells therefore, arn't alive.
Replywhen viruses are in the cells of living things ,they are said to be alive bcos they undergo all the characteristics of a living thing, but when in the cells of non living things they are said to be dead
ReplyIt difficult to say one or another. It does take the 7 characteristics of life: homeostasis, organization, metabolism, growth, adaptation, response to stimuli, and reproduction. Unfortunately these are applied to more complex beings. I would definitely say that a virus is not living but I would not say it was dead. To say that it was dead, means that it was living in the past. I have heard it termed as pre-bacterial life form but even then it falls into a catagory of chemical versus biological prevalence.
You've hit a grey area, not based on facts, but based on definition.

Replyya time to return the lap top to its place of purchase and get you money back
ReplyIf you have Windows XP use system restore to a point before that started then get system mechanic 30 day trial to clean it out. Just go to search and type in system mechanic and iolo is the site you want. You will see a 30 day full operational trial. Good Luck
ReplyDo a "Yahoo" or "Google" search on the pop ups you're getting might be some message boards out there to help you,,, PS...get better anti-virus software. hijackthis will work too,,,but you better know what you are deleting,,,ok?
ReplyInstall both Ad-aware and Skybot Seek %26amp; Destory on your PC. (They are both free downloads from download.com)
Then reboot the computer in Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly press the F8 key as the reboot starts until you get a menu screen that offers you the option to run in Safe Mode.
When you get in safe mode, the screen will look different then usual. That is normal.
Run both programs while in Safe Mode. Some viruses load themselves on boot up so the programs can not remove them because the files are in use. In Safe Mode, nothing is loaded during bootup, so they can be removed.

5. try not to use freeware such as Kazaa (comes with spyware)
6. try not to open attachment from people you dont trust
7. Do Not visit bad website, those featuring people without cloth on. If you do, they would be your primary sources of spyware.
Replyhi, i recommand you to try firefox.
firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.
besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

Protist Viruses?
584>Can someone point me in the way of some resources on viruses that infect the kingdom Protista? I haven't been able to find anything online myself.
Thanks
=)
ReplySo, I found this research paper after googling "viruses protists"
http://www.ebmonline.org/cgi/content/cit...
Which is probably high level than you want. Also, polyoma is a mammalian protist. You may want to note that it can also infect protists, though.
Here is another research article:
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob...
That paper's abstract is pretty understandable. I would note the virus family, type of viral nucleic acid, and the protist infected.
So, I think the problem is that viral infection of protists are not well studied (and as you can imagine, it is much harder to study infections on unicellular organisms that human viruses). If it isn't well studied, you're not going to be able to find much outside of research journals.
Hope that helped though.

Can viruses be transferred through video or picture when downloading them?
583>I downloaded some videos recently and since then my computer kinda lost balance and slows down alot could it be the video files ? I heared that you cant transfer viruses through video and picture files
help me !
ReplyYou must be new to this sort of things.Viruses are sent thru attachment (videos and images are attachment)and if you open the attachment, you are in deep trouble. So never, never open any attachment unless you are absolutely certain that it source can be trusted or friends you can trust. To be on the safe side always scan the attachment for virus before opening.Hasn't you notice that whenever you wanted to download attachment from Yahoo!Mail,Yahoo built in virus scanner pre scan the attachment for virus and inform you of the scan result. What you have to do now is to do a full virus scan of your computer.
ReplyThe picture can have a encrypted pic code in it. In other words each pixel is assigned a value ultimately adding up to a full feathered virus programed to release when the picture is opened, just like there are codex viruses, the virus is in the code not the music. Report It
ReplyYes, if programmers plan to do.....
ReplyIf there is a virus attached to the video or picture file, and you don't have a current virus scanning program, you will infect your computer.
It could also be that the video files were too large and are eating up the space on your hard-drive. Or, your processor could be too slow to function properly with the video files.
Replyyes, the same ways they come in programs.
ReplyYes virus can be downloaded with picture or video.
